The Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) is the world’s foremost agency for the study of public health during mass emergencies, including the epidemiology of diseases, plus the structural and socio-economic impacts of natural and technological disasters and human conflicts. Based since 1973 at the School of Public Health of the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain), Belgium, CRED became in 1980 a World Health Organization (WHO) collaboration centre. Since then, CRED has worked closely with United Nations agencies, inter-governmental and governmental institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), research institutes and other universities. Disasters preparedness, mitigation and prevention for vulnerable populations have also gained a higher profile within CRED’s activities in recent years. CRED is maintaining the Emergency Events Database (EM-DAT) since 1988. The main objectives of EM-DAT are to inform humanitarian action at the national and international levels in order to improve rational decision-making in disaster preparedness, provide objective data for assessing communities’ vulnerability to disasters and help policy-makers set priorities. EM-DAT contains core data on the occurrence and effects of more than 23,000 natural and technological disasters from 1900 to the present day. It is compiled from various sources (UN agencies, the US Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, national governments, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, NGOs, insurance companies, research institutes and the media) according to a priority list. CRED defines a disaster as “a situation or event that overwhelms local capacity, necessitating a request at the national or international level for external assistance; an unforeseen and often sudden event that causes great damage, destruction and human suffering”. Only natural disasters (biological excluded) are included in this publication. For a disaster to be entered into the database, at least one of the following criteria must be fulfilled: • 10 or more people reported killed • 100 or more people reported affected • declaration of a state of emergency • call for international assistance Since 2014, EM-DAT also georeferences natural disasters, adding geographical values to numeric data which is essential for deeper analysis.

The Humanitarian Data Exchange (HDX) is an open data sharing platform managed by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. The HDX organization is managed by the HDX data team and is used to share data on behalf of a number of partners

HeiGIT (Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology) performs applied research relating to geographic information. Results and data are made freely available for the benefit of the environment and society through stakeholders such as researchers and aid organizations & associations. The core foci of HeiGIT range from supporting humanitarian missions with customized geodata, to developing intelligent routing solutions for disasters or heatwaves. HeiGIT also implements innovative methods from the fields of spatial data processing and machine learning to analyze, enrich, and visualize geodata (e.g. OpenStreetMap data), as well as offering practical data analysis for climate protection initiatives. HeiGIT gGmbH was founded in 2019 as an affiliated institute of Heidelberg University, with core funding from the Klaus Tschira Foundation.

HOT works both remotely and physically in countries to assist the collection of geographic data, usage of that information and training others in OpenStreetMap.

Insecurity Insight supports the work of aid agencies, providers of healthcare, education, and protection services, and other civil society organisations by providing publicly available information for evidence-based policies. It collects and analyses data about violence against civilians and damage and destruction of vital civilian infrastructure in order strengthen civilian protection and the delivery of aid in armed conflict. Insecurity Insight is an H2H (humanitarian to humanitarian) association.

The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) is the leading source of information and analysis on internal displacement. For the millions of people worldwide displaced within their own country, IDMC plays a unique role as a global monitor and evidence-based advocate to influence policy and action by governments, UN agencies, donors, international organisations and NGOs. IDMC was established in 1998 at the request of the Interagency Standing Committee on humanitarian assistance. Since then, IDMC’s unique global function has been recognised and reiterated in annual UN General Assembly resolutions. IDMC is part of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), an independent, non-governmental humanitarian organisation.

NASA FIRMS uses satellite observations from the MODIS and VIIRS instruments to detect active fires and thermal anomalies and deliver this information in near real-time to decision makers through email alerts, analysis ready data, online maps and web services.

The Financial Tracking System (FTS) is a centralized source of curated, continuously updated, fully downloadable data and information on humanitarian funding flows.  Government donors, UN-administered funds, UN agencies, NGOs and other humanitarian actors exchange data and information with FTS in order to provide: a timely and continuously updated picture of funding flows into existing humanitarian operations; funding progress against humanitarian response plan and related appeal requirements and information on existing gaps; visibility on who is funding what across humanitarian operations FTS collects, curates and publishes all data reported to it by designated focal points within organizations. This is known as “total reported funding.” Some of this funding may contribute to collectively agreed objectives, activities and projects within Humanitarian Response Plans (HRPs) while other data may fall outside existing appeals.

The OCHA Nepal presence was created in response to the 25 April 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal with the epicenter located 81 km northwest of the capital city of Kathmandu.

Using state-​of-the-art probabilistic modelling, CLIMADA allows to estimate the expected economic damage as a measure of risk today, the incremental increase from economic growth and the further incremental increase due to climate change. The economics of climate adaptation methodology as implemented in CLIMADA provides decision makers with a fact base to understand the impact of weather and climate on their economies, including cost/benefit perspectives on specific risk reduction measures. The model is well suited to provide an open and independent view on physical risk, in line with e.g. the TCFD (Task Force for Climate-​related Financial Disclosure), and underpins the Economics of Climate Adaptation (ECA) approach. As of today, CLIMADA provides global coverage of major climate-​related extreme-​weather hazards at high resolution via a data API, namely (i) tropical cyclones, (ii) river flood, (iii) agro drought and (iv) European winter storms, all at 4km spatial resolution - wildfire to be added soon. For all hazards, historic and probabilistic event sets exist, for some also under select climate forcing scenarios (RCPs) at distinct time horizons (e.g. 2040).

Accessing disaster information can be a time consuming and laborious task. Not only is data scattered but frequently identification of the disaster can be confusing in countries with many disaster events. To address both of these issues, Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC) proposed a globally common Unique ID code for disasters. This idea was shared and promoted by OCHA/ReliefWeb, OCHA/FSCC, UNDRR, UNDP, WMO, IFRC, OFDA-USAID, FAO, La Red, the World Bank, the European Commission and the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED), and was jointly launched as a new initiative "GLobal IDEntifier Number (GLIDE)". Since the beginning of 2004, GLobal IDEntifier numbers (GLIDE) are produced by this website (GLIDEnumber.net) for all new disaster events reported by partner institutions and those discovered by ADRC. The components of a GLIDE number consist of two letters to identify the disaster type (e.g. EQ - earthquake); the year of the disaster; a six-digit, sequential disaster number; and the three-letter ISO code for country of occurrence. So, for example, the GLIDE number for West-India Earthquake in India is: EQ-2001-000033-IND.
