Accessing disaster information can be a time consuming and laborious task. Not only is data scattered but frequently identification of the disaster can be confusing in countries with many disaster events. To address both of these issues, Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC) proposed a globally common Unique ID code for disasters. This idea was shared and promoted by OCHA/ReliefWeb, OCHA/FSCC, UNDRR, UNDP, WMO, IFRC, OFDA-USAID, FAO, La Red, the World Bank, the European Commission and the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED), and was jointly launched as a new initiative "GLobal IDEntifier Number (GLIDE)". Since the beginning of 2004, GLobal IDEntifier numbers (GLIDE) are produced by this website (GLIDEnumber.net) for all new disaster events reported by partner institutions and those discovered by ADRC. The components of a GLIDE number consist of two letters to identify the disaster type (e.g. EQ - earthquake); the year of the disaster; a six-digit, sequential disaster number; and the three-letter ISO code for country of occurrence. So, for example, the GLIDE number for West-India Earthquake in India is: EQ-2001-000033-IND.

The GEM Foundation is a non-profit, public-private partnership that drives a global collaborative effort to develop scientific and high-quality resources for transparent assessment of earthquake risk and to facilitate their application for risk management around the globe. Assisted by an initiative of the OECD's Global Science Forum, GEM was formed in 2009 as a non-profit foundation in Pavia, Italy, funded through a public-private sponsorship with the vision to create a world that is resilient to earthquakes. GEM’s mission is to become one of the world’s most complete sources of risk resources and a globally accepted standard for seismic risk assessment; and to ensure that its products are applied in earthquake risk management worldwide.

Together with our partners, we generate needed evidence for country- and region-led policies that contribute to poverty reduction and help ensure that all people have access to safe, sufficient, nutritious, and sustainably produced food. Through multisectoral research and engagement with stakeholders, IFPRI informs effective policies, programs, and investments that contribute to productive livelihoods and sustainable, resilient, and equitable agriculture and food systems. IFPRI is a Research Center of CGIAR, the world’s largest agricultural innovation network, and the only CGIAR center solely dedicated to food policy research. The Institute currently has more than 480 employees from around the world working in over 70 countries, with about half of our research staff based in developing countries.
