Since 2015, Who's On First has been aggregating and normalizing open data from hundreds of authoritative sources, original research projects, and volunteered geographic information (VGI) reviewed by our community. We are a Linux Foundation project, originally incubated at Mapzen.

WorldPop works to ensure that every person is mapped and counted in decision making. WorldPop is an applied research and implementation group based at the University of Southampton and develops open, academically peer-reviewed methods for mapping populations at high spatial resolution across the globe. Since 2013, they have partnered with governments, UN agencies and donors to construct more than 45,000 demographic datasets, complementing traditional population sources with dynamic, high-resolution data from satellites and cellphones for mapping human population distributions.

The geoBoundaries Global Database of Political Administrative Boundaries Database is an online, open license resource of boundaries (i.e., state, county) for every country in the world. We currently track approximately 1 million boundaries within over 200 entities, including all 195 UN member states. All boundaries are available to view or download in common file formats, including shapefiles; we seek to represent countries as they would represent themselves in the case of conflicted boundaries.
