PARTNER: Presbyterian Church in Ireland PROJECT: Thalara Education Advancement Project in Nepal transforms the teaching-learning pedagogy and school environment from ECD to grade three through the practice of activity-based learning.

The ‘Technical Support for Internships for Poverty Reduction and Development Capacity Building’ project, implemented by UCC, aims to support the longer-term professional development of Irish-based students through experience of development work and life in a developing country. The objective is to contribute to the capacity of partner organisations and to expand the cadre of well-trained development professionals available to Irish and international development organisations. The key activities include identifying partner organisations, developing job descriptions, identifying candidates for interviews, preparing students for departure, monitoring and supporting students during placement, and debriefing upon return. The overall goal of the project is to improve the health and well-being of five Dailit communities in Madhesh Province, Nepal, working towards Zero Leprosy. Despite SDG adoption and legislation preventing caste distinctions, the Dailits remain one of the most most socially and economically marginalised groups in Nepal. Around 85% of the Dalit people are poorly paid agricultural or other manual workers and many suffer from poverty-imduced hunger. Dailit communites present with poorer development indicators than the wider Nepali society. Guided by Lalgadh Leprosy Hospital and leprosy-affected self-help group members, the project seeks to help overcome extreme poverty and stigmatisation throuh renewed personal and community mindsets; learning in self-help groups: economic, environmental and educational improvements through income generation, clean water, sanitation, hygiene, maternal and child health and school attendance

The aim of the project is to improve the health, well-being and dignity of people affected by leprosy or disability in four highly endemic districts in southern Nepal (Lalitpur, Bara, Parsa and Rautahat). Through the current project, TLMNI will seek to enhance the technical capacity of Government health workers and community health volunteers to identify, diagnose, treat, and manage leprosy and complications. It will bring vital hospital services directly to rural communities providing surgery and preventing further disability. In addition, it will help participants to build resilience through self-help groups with opportunities to develop climate resilient livelihoods and for meaningful engagement with local government on relevant issues. The key implementing partner, TLM-Nepal, is well established and works through government frameworks and in line with national and international policies. As part of the Leprosy Mission Global Fellowship, TLMNI has access to a network of global expertise on leprosy, enabling themmake high quality interventions that will contribute significantly towards eradicating leprosy in Nepal. The project’s multi pronged approach is gender and context sensitive. The strong focus on supporting women and girls and detailed climate impact analysis to help develop sustainable livelihood approaches is coherent with A Better World and the priority areas of gender equality and climate action.
