F.a: Youth Centre Programme

Youth Centre in Kathmandu. The project seeks to empower a local partner for youth work of its own. Now, after the civil war, the capital of Kathmandu is facing a huge wave of immigration from the rural areas to the city. The young generation in particular is moving into the city in search for work, but lacks sufficient skills and training. Fida partners with the Assemblies of God church (AOG) to address the needs of the youth. Fida and its partner will establish a youth centre in the capital that provides v ocational training and counselling to the youth, and facilities for leisure time activities. The AOG church youth will act as volunteers at the centre. Through the youth centre the partner will learn to work with the youth in practice. The youth, in turn, will have their educational and other needs addressed. All in all, the project will improve the life skills of the youth.

CLARE Asia workshop 6-8 October

This project focuses on enhancing the peer learning of the Asian projects under the Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CLARE) program. CLARE is a partnership between the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and IDRC. It aims to enable socially inclusive and sustainable action to build resilience to climate change by supporting governments, communities and the private sector to drive long-term solutions while strengthening capacity of both those carrying out the research and those using the resulting evidence. This will be the first time ten partners working in 15 countries in Asia will come together, and a structured program will deepen learning across the different projects, help articulate a cross-project program perspective, and foster engagement with a diverse set of climate action stakeholders. This will be achieved through a three-day workshop, co-designed with all partners, with local partners leading on creating engagement with external stakeholders.

Bridging gaps and scaling up a school readiness program for the child-parent-teacher triad in Bangladesh, Nepal and Tanzania

Despite global efforts to improve children's readiness, many children are not well prepared to start school. This project builds on the success of the “Every Newborn-Reach Up Early Education Intervention for All Children” (ENREACH) initiative, which successfully increased children’s readiness to enter pre-primary school in Bangladesh, Nepal and Tanzania with supports for both children and their caregivers. This project will build evidence to adapt ENREACH to include teachers by enhancing the capacity of both parents and teachers. The project will explore how to improve teacher engagement and teaching competencies. Knowledge mobilization will help integrate the model into practice, reaching key stakeholders within the ministries of education in all three countries. The goal is to facilitate its transition into a government-supported program. The research consists of a trial with preschool teachers and caregivers and targets children aged 60 to 72 months enrolled in pre-school, ensuring that those with disabilities and both boys and girls are included. The project will produce a comprehensive training package focusing on foundational skills through play-based teaching, tools for school readiness, resources for mobilization of stakeholders and a cost evaluation framework. This project is funded under the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) Knowledge and Innovation Exchange, a joint endeavour between the GPE and IDRC to connect expertise, innovation and knowledge to help low- and middle-income countries build stronger education systems and accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goal on education.
